As per current information, 22 people have died due to the interrupted supply of oxygen at the Zakir Hussain municipal hospital," district collector Suraj Mandhare.
All the victims were on ventilators and in need of constant oxygen supply. Zakir Hussain Hospital is a Covid-dedicated facility. Around 150 patients were either oxygen-dependent or on ventilators.

UP police get clean chit in Vikas Dubey Case

The Justice (Retd) BS Chauhan inquiry commission has given a clean chit to UP Police in the encounter killing case of gangster Vikas Dubey and his aides, said sources.
The clean chit to UP Police in the Vikas Dubey encounter case comes as a huge relief for the police force that was accused of gunning down the gangster as revenge for his killing eight policemen.
After investigating the case for 8 months, the Justice Chauhan inquiry commission has concluded that no evidence was found against the UP Police, said sources.
According to sources, no eyewitness accounts were found in the case which could have negated the UP Police's version of events that led to Vikas Dubey's encounter in July last year

What led to Vikas Dubey's encounter?

Early in July 2020, 8 policemen were gunned down in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur in a fierce gunbattle after a police team was ambushed by Vikas Dubey's associates.
The Kanpur police team had gone to raid history-sheeter Vikas Dubey who had around 60 criminal cases in his name. As the group of police personnel raided the Bikaru village in search of Vikas Dubey, the team was ambushed.
A week later, Vikas Dubey was arrested in Madhya Pradesh and was being brought back to UP by the police when the car they were travelling in overturned on the highway.
An encounter broke out on the road as Vikas Dubey tried to escape and police gunned him down.
Soon after, the Opposition launched an attack on the UP government over Vikas Dubey's encounter killing. Congress raised several questions over the whole episode and asked how could only one car in the convoy overturn

Chad President Idriss Deby Itno killed in clash with rebels

Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno, who ruled the central African nation for more than three decades, died Tuesday of wounds suffered on the battlefield during a fight against rebels, the military announced on national television and radio.
The stunning announcement came just hours after electoral officials had declared Deby, 68, the winner of the April 11 presidential election, paving the way for him to stay in power for six more years.

An 18-month transitional council will be led by Deby’s 37-year-old son, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the military said, also imposing a nightly curfew of 6 p.m.
“In the face of this worrying situation, the people of Chad must show their attachment to peace, to stability and to national cohesion,” Gen. Azem Bermandoa Agouma said.
The circumstances of Deby’s death could not immediately be independently confirmed due to the remote location of the fighting.

The military said Deby had taken “the heroic lead in combat operations against terrorists who had come from Libya.” After being wounded in battle, he then was taken to the capital, the general announced.
Deby, a former army commander-in-chief, first came to power in 1990 when his rebel forces overthrew then-President Hissene Habre, who was later convicted of human rights abuses at an international tribunal in Senegal.
Over the years Deby had survived numerous armed rebellions and managed to stay in power until this latest insurgency led by a group calling itself the Front for Change and Concord in Chad.
The rebels are believed to have armed and trained in neighboring Libya before crossing into northern Chad on April 11. Their arrival came on the same day that Chad’s president sought a sixth term on election day, which several top opposition candidates boycotted.
Deby was a major French ally in the fight against Islamic extremism in Africa, hosting the base for the French military Operation Barkhane and supplying critical troops to the peacekeeping effort in northern Mali.

Queen Elizabeth Marks 95th Birthday

Britain's Queen Elizabeth, the world's oldest monarch, turns 95 on Wednesday, but there will be no public celebrations of an occasion that comes just days after she bade a sad farewell to her husband of seven decades at his funeral. Prince Philip, whom Elizabeth married in 1947, died on April 9 at the age of 99. The royals paid their final respects to the family's patriarch at his funeral on Saturday at Windsor Castle.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the queen sat alone during the sombre service for Philip, who she had described as her "strength and stay".
Elizabeth, who is also the world's longest-reigning monarch, will be at the castle for her birthday, which traditionally passes off with little or no ceremony.
However this year, with the royals marking two weeks of mourning, it will pass off with even less public show: there will be no gun salutes at the Tower of London nor the capital's Hyde park which usually occur on the queen's birthday.
The queen also has an official birthday, which is usually celebrated with greater pomp on the second Saturday in June.

Covid-19: UK puts India on red list

India has been the biggest global hotspot of Covid-19 pandemic for about two weeks. Some countries have responded with restrictions on travel from and to India. New Zealand, Hong Kong and Pakistan have banned travel from India. The UK has put India on a red list after its Prime Minister Boris Johnson called off his April visit in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases in both the countries.
“We’ve made the difficult but vital decision to add India to the Red List. This means anyone who is not a UK or Irish resident or a British citizen cannot enter the UK if they’ve been in India in the previous 10 days,” UK Secretary of State for Health Matt Hancock told Parliament, according to a Reuters report. “UK and Irish residents and British citizens who’ve been in India in the past 10 days before their arrival will need to complete hotel quarantine for 10 days from the time of arrival.”
PTI reported that Hancock said samples of the so-called “Indian variant” of the virus have been analysed to see if the new variant has any “concerning characteristics”, such as greater transmissibility or resistance to treatments and vaccines.
“After studying the data, and on a precautionary basis, we’ve made the difficult but vital decision to add India to the red list,” the minister told MPs.
The move came hours after Downing Street had announced the cancellation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s visit to India next week due to a spike in Covid-19 infections in the country.

EC issues notice to Suvendu Adhikari over ‘communal’ speech

The Election Commission Thursday issued a notice to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari for ‘communal overtones’ of his speech made on March 29 aimed at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He has been asked to respond to the notice within 24 hours. The notice said the poll panel received a complaint from Kavita Krishnan of CPI-ML Central Committee in which it was alleged that on March 29 Adhikari delivered a "hate speech" in Nandigram while addressing a public meeting. The EC referred to two provisions of the Model Code of Conduct which state that criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies and programmes, past record and work.Criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided. Another provision states that there shall be no appeal to caste or communal feelings for securing votes. The notice said the EC has been found to be in violation of certain clauses of the model code. The authorities in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar, Allahabad, Meerut and Ghaziabad imposed night curfew to tackle the spiralling coronavirus cases. In Bareilly, the night curfew will be imposed from Friday, while similar restrictions were imposed in Kanpur and the Lucknow Municipal Corporation areas on Wednesday, taking the number of such districts to seven.
The movement of essential goods or commodities and medical and other essential services will be exempted from the restrictions, the orders issued by the Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar district magistrates said. All government and private educational institutes, except medical, paramedical and nursing colleges, shall be barred from holding physical classes till April 17 in the two districts.

As per officials, the curfew will be in place between 10 pm to 5 am till April 17th. However, the movement of essential goods and services will be exempted from the order, officials said.

The decision was taken by the administrations after a review meeting on the current Covid situation. The state government on Wednesday had authorised DMs in districts with more than 500 active cases to decide further course of action.

“All government, private educational institutes (except medical, paramedical and nursing), including coaching institutes will not be allowed to hold physical classes till April 17.
